Apr. 30th, 2008 10:56 pmIn the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, British Army, Royal Marines and the Royal Air Force hand salutes are only given when a cover (protection for the head, usually a hat) is worn. Officers of the Royal Navy wearing civilian clothes render a hand salute when hatless; if wearing a hat a salute is rendered by lifting the hat (known as 'doffing') instead. The U.S. Army gives salutes both covered and uncovered. Saluting indoors is forbidden except when formally reporting to a superior officer or during an indoor ceremony.

Date: 2008-05-01 03:31 am (UTC)Observant Jews have the custom to take three steps back and then three steps forward both before and after reciting the Amidah. The steps backward at the beginning represent withdrawing one's attention from the material world, and then stepping forward to symbolically approach the King of Kings. The Mishnah Berurah wrote that only the steps forward are necessary, while the backward steps beforehand are a prevalent custom.
