To provide an interpretation of (a statement or event, for example), especially in a way meant to sway public opinion: “a messenger who spins bogus research into a vile theology of hatred” (William A. Henry III).
I do not understand how anyone can seriously statements like: "

Wallace commissioned Roerich to go to China to collect wild grass seed. But stories in English language newspapers in China indicated that Roerich applied to the 15th U.S. Infantry in Tientsin for rifles and ammunition and that the expedition had mysterious purposes. Of course, Roerich was not a botanist, and had no special qualifications for hunting wild grass seeds.
Those stories were bogus -- planted by two American botanists who were assigned to the expedition but who apparently were never told that Roerich was its' leader. They refused to join the expedition and were badmouthing Roerich in the press -- so he was forced to hire local botanists to do the job. There was a scientific botanical report filed with the Department of Agriculture upon the abrupt termination of the expedition by Wallace.
The contents of these letters are silly to the point of being imbecilic.
Well, those were esoteric letters written by the disciple to his master -- should Wallace have behaved a little smarter he could have let the whole thing blow over. And yet he hesitated, and that was the end of his political career.
A fitting finale for someone who had betrayed his master, if you ask me.

Про ботаников и ружья - я этой истории не знаю, не изучал. Вы думаете, что Финн мог знать на момент написания книги, что это все было неправдой?
В любом случае - похоже на то, что Уоллес, посчитав себя духовным учеником Рериха, проспонсировал его экспедицию в Тибет под надуманным предлогом (все-таки к ботанике Рерих не имел отношения). Воспользовался служебным положением, так сказать.

Не знаю, но в любом случае его подход последователен и тенденциозен -- из всех возможных объяснений и свидетельств он всегда выбирает наиболее порочащее Рериха.

Опять же, смотря как посмотреть. С одной стороны да, но с другой -- у Рериха безусловно был огромный и уникальный опыт преведения экспедиций в Азии, и научную задачу экспедиция таки выполнила. У Рериха часто так было -- экспедиция в Тибет на поверхности проходила с антропологической целью, и с тем, чтобы запечатлеть природу и т.д. в картинах. Эта задача была выполнена -- первой частью занимался Юрий Рерих, позже известный востоковед. Кроме того, была тайная задача -- экспедиция была "посольством Западных Буддистов к Далай-Ламе". Благодаря стараниям английской разведки, эта задача не была выполнена.
Так что здесь немного сложнее -- не "вместо", а "вместе с".
