Asked if there was a response to the Russian Ambassador's call for clarification whether the Government believed that the Russian Government had been involved with the Litvinenko murder, the PMS said that in relation to the stories that had appeared earlier this week, no intelligence or security officials had been authorised to comment on the Litvinenko case and it was our longstanding policy not to comment on intelligence or security issues. In relation to culpability, the police and the Crown Prosecution Service had identified an individual as the person they believed should stand trial for the murder.
