In India, Saudi diplomat Ahmed Alshehri, based in Bombay, denied that he was the father of hijacker Waleed M. Alshehri or that he had ever served in the United States. Diplomatic lists, however, show an Ahmed Alshehri as second secretary at the Saudi Embassy in Washington, and property records, law enforcement sources and witnesses have linked him with Waleed. Reports from a Saudi newspaper editor said yesterday that both Waleed and Wail Alshehri, another hijacker, were Ahmed's sons.

They were smart, technically proficient, and ambitious in their own peculiar way. They were comfortable with the Internet and the modern modes of business travel. They were the kind of people who could have succeeded in America if they hadn't wanted to destroy it.

Theirs was a soft, subtle presence in this country for many months, in some cases years. They didn't blend in, exactly, but they stayed out of trouble. One suspected ringleader, Mohamed Atta, got a ticket in April for driving without a license, and failed to show up for his court hearing, but police never followed up on a bench warrant for his arrest. Other than that his only slip-up came a couple of years ago in Germany, when he failed to return three rented videos ("Ace Ventura," "Vampire" and "Storm of the Century Part II") and the movie rental company turned to a collection agency.

"Something as simple as a good door could have changed everything," said a Washington-based airline pilot who watched Tuesday's drama unfold from his home in Northern Virginia. "Cockpit doors are so flimsy you can easily kick them down -- that's true of any Airbus or Boeing out there."

Aviation security experts have known for years that cockpit doors were vulnerable. Although FAA guidelines require that the doors remain locked during flights, they can be breached relatively easily, as they have been on numerous occasions. Not only are the doors flimsy, but they can be opened using a single master key that works for any aircraft of the same model.

Since 1998 there have been at least 14 attempts by drunk or disturbed passengers to force their way into airliner cockpits during flights, six of which have been successful. In June 1999, a passenger armed with an eight-inch knife forced his way into an All Nippon Airways cockpit and fatally stabbed the pilot.

Although some international airlines have shifted to stronger doors -- Israel's El Al Airlines features a door secured with steel rods -- the idea never caught hold in the United States. Both the FAA and the pilots favored flimsy doors to help cockpit crews escape in a crash.

Tomorrow a hastily composed task force of representatives from the airline industry, the FAA and employee unions are to meet for the first time to discuss fortifying cockpit doors. The Air Line Pilots Association is now lobbying to retrofit jets with fortified doors.

Capt. Stephen Luckey, longtime chief security official for the pilots group, acknowledged that the union's position is a 180-degree reversal.

Пока - укладывается в теорию о том, что ребята не были связаны с Нагруженным Мусорным Ведром (НМВ). То есть как бы дети из приличных семей, учатся техническим делам, в какой-то момент (ориентировочно - года два назад) сдвигаются на религиозно-политической почве, образуют узкий кружок, задумывают акт, готовят, совершают. Родители могут вообще не знать, могут догадываться о чем-то - вряд ли посвящены в планы. В этой ситуации оказываются объяснимы и деньги, необходимые для операции, включая обучение и т.д. - для этого достаточны состоятельные родители, а вовсе не подпольные миллионеры.

AL-MARJ, Lebanon (AP) - The Lebanese family of a man named as a hijacker in the attacks on the United States expressed disbelief Saturday, saying if their relative was on one of the four doomed flights he would have been an innocent passenger, not a terrorist. "Concerning Ziad Jarrah, whose name was mentioned by news agencies, we cannot imagine that this boy would ever carry out such an act," said his uncle, Nazem Jarrah. Очень характерно, что предполагаемые террористы - не вообще мусульмане, а именно арабы. В этом же ключе очень поучительно наблюдение yanisа - http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?itemid=10781407 :

Специально прошел пешком через весь бруклин по мусульманским местам. В пакистанских кварталах совершенно реальный траур, американские флаги и транспаранты, приглашающие на специальню молитву по жертвам теракта. В арабской же части (Атлантик авеню) ни одного американского флага, работают все рестораны и магазины.

Похоже, еще одно подтверждение того факта, что подобного рода конфликты чаще всего носят национальную подоплеку, которая поверхностным наблюдателям (и даже ангажированным участникам) представляется религиозной. Примеров множество. Так, "православная солидарность" в России спотыкается на грузинах и молдаванах (да и на украинцах буксует), таковая же сербов - на болгарах. Армяне традиционно изображают свою войну как религиозную - а сами опираются на поддержку Ирана. И т.д., и т.п.

Так и здесь. Субъективно террористы могли видеть себя как защитников ислама, на деле были же защитниками фрустрированного арабского сознания, арабской легенды, выразителями арабских комплексов. Есть ощущение, что этих комплексов гораздо меньше у персов или пакистанцев - или они, эти комплексы, совсем другие и гораздо менее антиамериканские.

В этой ситуации антиисламская риторика оказывается не просто преступлением, но, хуже того, ошибкой.

Произношение

Вчера в гостях снова обратил внимание, как по-разному эмигранты употребляют английские слова в русской речи. Слов этих, естественно, очень много, причем больше всего употребляется их для описания таких понятий, с которыми они в советское время непосредственно не сталкивались. Например, почти все рассуждают не о "налогах", а о "таксах" - в совке налоги не ощущались как жизненный вопрос.

Но интересно различие между теми, кто английский учил еще в СССР, и теми, кто освоил его уже в Америке. Первые склоняются к "писаной" норме, точнее сказать - к стандартному советскому школьному произношению. Вторые - утрируют произношение американское.

Так, собеседник объяснял, что деньги в наше время надо вкладывать в "бандс". Не сразу понял, что речь идет об облигациях (bonds). Я бы ожидал выбор между вариантами "облигации" и "бонды".

Тот же собеседник рассказывал про рестораны, в которых подают "лабстеров". Ходят эти люди на "шапинг" и т.д. Во всех случаях в русской речи этих людей в соответствующих словах "а" гораздо более артикулировано, чем в произношении американцев и даже этих же людей, но говорящих по-английски.
