In 1980, he killed his wife, the sociologist Hélène Rytmann, by strangling her. He was declared unfit to stand trial due to insanity and committed to a psychiatric hospital for three years. He did little further academic work, dying in 1990.

"Различные моменты первоначального накопления распределяются, исторически более или менее последовательно, между различными странами, а именно: между Испанией, Португалией, Голландией, Францией и Англией. В Англии к концу XVII века они систематически объединяются в колониальной системе и системе государственных займов, современной налоговой системе и системе протекционизма. Эти методы отчасти покоятся на грубейшем насилии, как, например, колониальная система. Но все они пользуются государственной властью, т. е. концентрированным и организованным общественным насилием, чтобы ускорить процесс превращения феодального способа производства в капиталистический и сократить его переходные стадии. Насилие является повивальной бабкой всякого старого общества, когда оно беременно новым. Само насилие есть экономическая потенция."
