We are watching with interest how the United States crosses a landmark line in foreign policy, starting to impose sanctions, to which Russia has long been accustomed, against its own allies. This is exactly what is envisioned by the law of December 20 on spending on US military needs in 2020, which contains a section on protecting Europe’s energy security.
The name is absolutely disorienting. Actually, this is not about helping Europeans to provide uninterrupted energy supplies at affordable prices, but about striving to deprive them of guaranteed sources of such supplies from Russia. Moreover, the desire to harm Russian exports is by no means the only or even the most important thing. No less evident is the desire to impose American liquefied gas on Europe, which costs it much more than pipeline deliveries from Russia, and thereby slow down the development of its economy and undermine its ability to compete with the United States in world markets. As a result, Europeans are losing in all respects.
For such purposes, the United States is not going to sanction European, but Russian, companies involved in the laying of the Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream pipelines. In Washington, it was decided that for the sake of geopolitical ambitions and commercial gain, one could spare no one, not even NATO’s closest partners.
Russia has implemented and will continue to implement its economic projects, regardless of any sanctions. It will, however, be curious to see how real European countries are sovereign, from which, for example, from Germany, today they demand a commanding voice from Washington to meekly finance the US energy industry, forgetting about their own economic interests.
