Thank you for your e-mail request. The quote by Senator Harry S. Truman appeared on page 7, column 8 of the June 24, 1941 issue of the New York Times. When asked by a reporter for his reaction to the Germans invading Russia, he replied:
"If we see that Germany is winning we ought to help Russia, and if Russia is winning we ought to help Germany, and that way let them kill as many as possible, although I don't want to see Hitler victorious under any circumstances."

Date: 2003-05-02 09:19 pm (UTC)И ведь глупость несусветная - какая на фиг "помощь Германии", если Германия воюет и с Англией? Трумэн был готов взять в союзники Гитлера, чтобы воевать со Сталиным и Черчиллем?
А ведь Трумэн себя так часто вёл куда взвешеннее многих других президентов США!
Что-то всё-таки тут не то...
А можно подробнее про "моральный облик Рузвельта"? Я читал, как он хитроумно спровоцировал нападение на Пёрл-Харбор, потому что недальновидный конгресс не позволял ему самому напасть на Японию, да и "возмущение мировой общественности" тоже пригодилось. Черчилль тоже вроде знал о предстоящей бомбёжке Ковентри, но не защитил город, чтобы не дать понять немцам, что читает их шифрограммы. Но ведь речь вроде идёт явно не об этом? Да и не такая уж это "мораль", возможно оба искренне хотели свести суммарные жерты к минимуму. Спасибо.
